Private jet and helicopter to Courchevel: how to plan the connection

By Accrocar7 min read

A private jet cannot take you to Courchevel itself. The Courchevel altiport is a short, steep mountain runway reserved for specially qualified pilots, so your jet lands at an airport in the valleys, usually Geneva, Chambéry, Grenoble or Lyon, and a helicopter takes you on to the altiport in about 25 to 40 minutes. The connection works well when three things line up: your jet’s landing time, daylight at the altiport and, from Switzerland, a customs request made a day ahead.

Why can’t a private jet land at Courchevel?

The altiport’s runway is about 537 metres long with a slope of up to 18.5%, according to the municipality. The French aeronautical information publication restricts aeroplanes to pilots who hold a mountain qualification or a specific authorisation, imposes landing in one direction and take-off in the other, and allows no night flights. It is a runway for small mountain aircraft and, above all, for helicopters, which make up most of its winter traffic. A business jet needs a conventional airport.

Your jet operator confirms which airport suits your aircraft and your date; the helicopter operator confirms the connection. Helicopter prices are per aircraft, one way, subject to availability and final confirmation; the jet is quoted separately. Geneva offers the most connections and the widest choice of helicopters, explained in our guide to Geneva–Courchevel aircraft; private jet categories are described in our private aircraft guide.

How is the connection sequenced?

  • Fix the jet’s landing time first, with daylight to spare: the Courchevel altiport opens from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time in winter, except by arrangement with its manager, and night flights are not allowed.
  • Give the helicopter operator your tail number and landing time, so the helicopter is timed to your arrival rather than to a fixed slot.
  • Allow for arrival formalities and the walk or drive to the helicopter, which the operator confirms for the airport you land at.
  • From Geneva, leave time for the customs request: the altiport requires it at least 24 hours before a flight from Switzerland.
  • Plan the luggage: a jet’s hold takes far more than a helicopter can. See our guide to skis and luggage on a helicopter.
  • Agree the fallback: if cloud or snow close the valleys, operators may offer a road transfer instead; the proposal sets out the weather terms.

What about borders and customs?

  • Arriving from outside the Schengen area, from London for example, you clear immigration at the airport where the jet lands. The Courchevel altiport accepts no flights from outside Schengen.
  • From Geneva, the helicopter leaves Switzerland, which is in Schengen but outside the European Union: the altiport requires a customs request at least 24 hours before the flight, and the operator confirms the arrangements.
  • From Chambéry, Grenoble or Lyon, the helicopter flight stays within France.

What happens at the altiport?

The helicopter lands at the altiport, at about 2,000 metres, and the last part of the journey to your chalet or hotel is by car. In France, leisure passengers may be set down in the mountains only at an aerodrome, so there is no landing at a chalet or on the slopes. The resort and its flights are presented on our Courchevel helicopter page.

What if the jet is late?

A delayed jet can push the helicopter past the last daylight slot. When that happens, the possible answers are a road transfer the same evening or a helicopter the next morning; which one depends on the operator and the conditions, and should be agreed in the proposal rather than on the day. Accrocar arranges private jets and helicopters through licensed operators and coordinates both legs; the route page is Geneva to Courchevel by private helicopter.
