How private helicopter charter works in Morocco: who flies, where you can land, and how long it takes

By Accrocar7 min read

In Morocco, a private helicopter is chartered with its pilot from a licensed operator, not hired like a car. It may take off and land at an aerodrome; anywhere else, such as a hotel, a villa, a lodge or a desert camp, needs a temporary authorisation from the competent authority, requested by the operator. That one rule explains most of what follows: why a flight from and back to Marrakech airport can be arranged quickly, why a landing at a private site takes time, and what an operator needs from you to say yes.

Who actually flies the helicopter?

Commercial helicopter flights are operated by companies authorised by Morocco’s civil aviation authority. Under the civil aviation code (law 40-13), a commercial air service needs an operating authorisation; only private, non-commercial flights are exempt. Accrocar is not an operator: it is a concierge that arranges your flight with a licensed operator, coordinates it with the rest of your stay and gives you one contact from the request to the landing. The operator confirms each flight in writing, and its name and the aircraft appear in the proposal.

Where may a helicopter land?

Article 121 of the civil aviation code sets the rule: apart from emergencies and rescue, an aircraft may land or take off only at an aerodrome open to air traffic or a restricted-use aerodrome, and the competent authority may temporarily authorise the use of a piece of land or a similar site. In practice:

  • Airports are straightforward. At Marrakech Menara, Morocco’s aeronautical publication makes ground handling mandatory for business and general aviation.
  • Hotels, villas, lodges and private land need prior authorisation; the operator confirms the site and the authorisations it needs.
  • Desert camps and remote sites are the same: nothing is promised until the site is authorised and the operator accepts it.

Describe the flight you have in mind

Departure, destination, date and party: Accrocar checks the request with licensed operators, including any landing authorisation, and returns a written proposal.

  • Departure and destination, as precisely as possible
  • Passengers and approximate weights
  • Airport or a site to be authorised
  • One Accrocar contact throughout

Price on request

Every flight is subject to operator availability, weather and, for landings away from an aerodrome, prior authorisation. Nothing is booked until you approve a written proposal.

The usual steps of a private helicopter request in Morocco

A flight from Marrakech Menara that returns there can often be planned quickly, subject to aircraft availability and the weather. The further from an airport and the more unusual the landing site, the earlier you should ask.

What does the operator need from you?

  • The date, the time window and how flexible you are.
  • Departure and arrival as coordinates or exact addresses, not just a town.
  • The number of passengers, their approximate weight and the luggage.
  • The purpose: a transfer, a scenic flight or a bespoke journey.
  • Any connection with a private or scheduled flight.

Which questions should you ask any operator?

  • Who operates the flight, and under which authorisation?
  • Which aircraft, and how many passengers with your luggage?
  • Is any landing already authorised, or only requested?
  • What happens if the weather moves the flight: postponement, refund or alternative?
  • Which taxes and fees are included in the price?

Which aircraft are used?

The operator chooses the aircraft, for example a light single-engine helicopter such as the Airbus H125, from the route, the passengers, the weight and the conditions: heat and altitude reduce what a helicopter can carry, which matters in Morocco’s summers and over the Atlas. Typical categories are presented in our private aircraft guide.

Helicopter, jet, or both?

For long distances within Morocco, a private jet between airports is often faster and more comfortable; for short hops to places without a runway, the helicopter is unmatched. Many journeys combine both; see our guide to private helicopter or private jet in Morocco. How a quote is built is explained in our article on Marrakech helicopter prices. All private helicopter services are on our helicopter charter Morocco page and our private aviation in Morocco page.

About this guide: written by Accrocar, a private aviation concierge in Marrakech that arranges flights through licensed operators and does not own or operate aircraft. The legal summary paraphrases Morocco’s civil aviation code (law 40-13); it is general information, not legal advice, and the operator confirms the rules that apply to each flight. Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know

Can I rent a helicopter in Morocco?

You charter one, with its pilot, from a licensed operator. Accrocar arranges private flights with licensed operators; each flight is confirmed in writing by the operator.

Can a helicopter land at my hotel or villa in Morocco?

Only with prior authorisation from the competent authority, which the operator requests; the operator confirms the site and the authorisations it needs. It takes time, and Accrocar never promises a landing in advance.

How far in advance should I ask?

A flight from and back to an airport can sometimes be arranged quickly. A landing at a private site needs an authorisation, so ask as early as you can.
