Marrakech, the High Atlas and Agafay by helicopter: what you see, and how to plan it

By Accrocar7 min read

A private helicopter flight from Marrakech can take in three landscapes: the stone desert of Agafay, about 30 kilometres south of the city; the green Ourika valley; and the High Atlas, whose summits include Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa. Heat reduces a helicopter’s performance, so flights in the warm months are planned early in the day. The route, the duration and any landing are planned with a licensed operator for your party alone.

What will you see from the helicopter?

  • Marrakech from above: the red city, its gardens and the Palmeraie, before the plain opens to the south.
  • Agafay: a bare, rolling stone desert of ochre hills, with the Atlas standing behind it on clear days.
  • The Ourika valley: a river valley cutting into the mountains, with terraced fields and Berber villages.
  • Imlil and the Toubkal massif: high valleys, walnut terraces and, in the cool months, snow on the summits.

Heat matters more than most travellers expect. Helicopter performance falls as temperature and altitude rise, which reduces what the aircraft can lift and the margin it has over the mountains. That is why summer flights are planned early in the day, and why the operator asks for your party’s approximate weight.

Can the helicopter land in the mountains or the desert?

It is tempting to imagine landing for lunch in a mountain lodge or a desert camp. In Morocco, an aircraft may land only at an aerodrome unless the competent authority temporarily authorises another site. Accrocar never promises a landing in advance: the operator checks each site and requests the authorisation, which takes time. A scenic flight otherwise returns to its departure point. The rules are set out in our guide to helicopter charter in Morocco.

How do you make the most of the flight?

  • Choose what matters most: snow and summits, desert, or villages and valleys. A focused route is better than trying to see everything.
  • Ask for the morning in summer and in clear winter weather; the light is lower and the air usually calmer.
  • Dress in layers for the mountains, and bring sunglasses for the light off the snow.
  • Bring a camera: the operator advises on what can be used in flight and where you sit.
  • Plan the day around it: a car or a chauffeur can take you to the airport and back, or onward.

What are the practical details?

  • Departure: the operator confirms the departure point, usually Marrakech Menara airport, and the time.
  • Passengers: send the number of passengers and an idea of their weight; it decides which aircraft can fly the route.
  • Duration: it depends on the itinerary, the aircraft, the weather and the operator’s confirmation, and is stated in the proposal.
  • Price: on request; how it is built is explained in our article on Marrakech helicopter prices.

Beyond the Atlas, bespoke journeys toward southern Morocco and the Sahara may be arranged subject to operator availability, weather and landing permissions; see our guide to Marrakech to Merzouga by private helicopter. The flights are presented on our Morocco helicopter tours page and our Marrakech helicopter page.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know

Can you fly over the Atlas Mountains by helicopter from Marrakech?

Yes, on request: a licensed operator can plan a private scenic flight from Marrakech over the High Atlas, the Ourika valley and Agafay, subject to availability and the weather.

What is the best season for a helicopter flight over the Atlas?

Autumn and winter bring snow on the summits. In summer, flights are planned early because heat reduces helicopter performance; in every season, the operator decides on the day according to the weather.

Can the helicopter land in the Agafay desert?

Only at a site the authority has authorised in advance. Accrocar does not promise a landing; the operator checks each site and requests the authorisation.
